Sports betting legal timeline

Back in 1931, Nevada was the first state that managed to completely legalize all of the gambling and betting games. Continuing that trend, in 1992 Nevada took the lead as being the only state where people could enjoy sports betting.

However, as of May 2018 things have changed. The Federal ban on betting has been lifted (the repeal of PASPA) and Nevada does not have a unique position anymore. Other states are now permitted to regulate sports wagering as well. Even though Nevada is well known for the incredible entertainment people can find at land-based casinos and bookmakers, it is important to note that running an online bookmaker is illegal in this state.

It’s admittedly a bit strange that the state with the laxest betting laws still cannot move into the online sports betting market. But now that other states are moving in that direction, The Silver State is sure to follow to keep their competitive market edge. Online betting is in development here and will likely become legal and regulated in the near future.

How to find online bookmakers in Nevada

The online sports wagering industry has been a little slow to start in Nevada. For a long time, the state only wanted visitors to their land-based casinos and physical sport book locations. But sports betting is going online (much like the rest of everything) and if the Silver State wants to stay relevant, their services will move online too. If you’re in Nevada or passing through, here are some considerations to find a safe and secure bookie.

  1. Any betting site you use should be labeled with “https://”. This means that the site is secure and you should feel confident that your personal information will stay private.
  2. Make sure there is a variety of betting options. You can use the number of choices and betting odds a bookie provides as a proxy for customer service. A good bookie will publish the best odds across all the major leagues and sports. Be certain you can find good odds on the NFL, NBA, MLB, and the NHL. They’re going to be the most popular. But also look for new and emerging sports odds like MMA or various European sports like Premier League or Champions League.
  3. Search for bonus codes or promotions. This is another proxy for customer service. You can assume a bookie will treat their customers right if from the very beginning they’re offering exclusive bonuses and promos or advertising a loyalty program. All great things for an active sports bettor.

Sports betting options

The Silver State primarily focuses on land-based casino entertainment but sports betting still has a presence (albeit a small one). Look for more sportsbooks to pop up and for them to plan a move online once some legislation is drafted. For now, here are a few bookies where you can make bets on sports in Nevada.
