On May 8, 2019, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed bill H 1015 making sports betting legal in the Hoosier state. Indiana is the tenth state to legalize sports gambling since PASPA was overturned in May 2018. Holcomb believes legalized sports betting will positively impact Indiana’s economic growth and open up employment opportunities for over 11,000 people.

This is great news for Indiana sports betting, we know that Delaware sports betting was a good thing.

You can now bet online in Indiana with PointsBet, BetRivers, FanDuel, and DraftKings.

Sports Betting in Indiana

While the passing of H 1015 makes sports betting in Indiana a reality, there is still plenty of work to do before any legal sports bets can be placed in the state. For starters, potential sportsbook operators need to form partnerships with existing casinos and acquire the proper licenses. Under the newly established legislation, applications for sports betting licenses will be accepted by the Indiana Gaming Commission starting July 1, 2019.

To speed things up, the Indiana Gaming Commission can issue temporary licenses for sports betting as those applicants wait for full approval. In addition to sports betting licenses, betting platforms and software need to be tested and licensed as well which will take a bit of time.

Sportsbooks definitely want to be up and running for the start of the NFL’s regular season on September 5th. However, some feel that this timeline might be a bit optimistic.

As it stands, Indiana residents cannot yet place legal sports bets. Harrah’s Hoosier Park, Tropicana, and French Lick Casino are odds-on favorites to get out of the gate first. French Lick Casino took a gamble by starting the construction of their sportsbook last year. Gambling and entertainment heavyweights Tropicana and Caesars already have fully licensed sportsbooks in other states.

Opponents of legalized sports betting in Indiana such as Rep. Ben Smaltz lobbied for mobile betting to be removed from the bill. In fact, it was removed for a while but it was added once again at the last moment. This is great news for DraftKings and FanDuel who are in an excellent position to offer online betting apps in Indiana.

William Hill

No list of the best sports betting bookmakers would be complete without the addition of William Hill. William Hill is one of the foremost names when it comes to sports betting and betting bookmakers. The William Hill brand launched in the United Kingdom almost a century ago and has been amassing both fans and bets ever since. However, William Hill only crossed the pond into the United States as recently as the year 2012.

Even so, the William Hill online sportsbook has made quite a splash stateside. With an app available for both iOS/iPhone customers as well as Android customers, the online sportsbook is increasingly easy to use. And, the desktop site itself is very user friendly and functional.

FOXBet

The FOXBet online sportsbook has the distinction of being the first sports betting site from a large media conglomerate. Born as a partnership between FOX Sports and the Stars Group, FOX Bet has quite a name to live up to. Luckily, fans have been quick to flock to the online sports betting site from FOX. Another benefit to the FOXBet online sports betting site is the twofold sign up bonus offer. New users will receive a $500 risk free bet when they create their sportsbook account. Plus, the new users can also receive a first deposit bonus match offer of up to $500.

Indiana Sports Betting Regulations

Bill H 1015 makes three important changes to gambling in Indiana sports betting. The most notable change is allowing sports betting in Indiana’s casinos, racino’s, and the state’s off-track betting establishments. Secondly, the new laws will allow a pair of riverboat casinos to move from Gary to more favorable inland locations. Racetrack casinos, or racinos, will be able to offer table games starting in 2020.

Although the idea of mobile sports betting was met with some resistance, it was ultimately included in the bill and will be allowed statewide. This will, hopefully, positively impact the Indiana sports betting status in the state.

The Indiana Gaming Commission hasn’t yet established in-play wagering limits nor has it set any ground rules with regard to official sports data sources. Vendors will need to cough up a $100,000 licensing fee and another $50,000 annually. Operators are subject to a 9.5 percent tax rate on gross revenue. A portion of those taxes will be set aside for programs that fight problem gambling.

It should also be noted that sportsbooks in Indiana can only accept wagers from bettors who are at least 21 and physically within the state’s borders. Other states that permit mobile sports betting such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey use geofencing technology to ensure all online bets are placed from within their respective states. Indiana is expected to use the same technology. This eliminates the need for registering in person to verify identity which is currently the way it’s done in Nevada.

Which Sports Can I Bet On In Indiana?

Once sportsbook operators clear the last few hurdles, those in Indiana will be able to place bets online or at land-based retail outlets. In both cases, sports bettors can expect a full complement of sportsbook bonuses, betting opportunities, and markets.

Professional and college sports like football, baseball, and basketball will be offered along with other sports ranging from golf and tennis to soccer and hockey. Many foreign leagues such as Premier League, La Liga, and Champions League are also sure to draw a lot of betting action.

Other sports that will be open to betting include but are not limited to:

  • Boxing
  • MMA
  • Bowling
  • Formula 1
  • Indy Car
  • Nascar
  • Lacrosse
  • Horse Racing

Thanks to the legalization of mobile betting, Indiana sports betting bookmakers can expect to take a lot of live in-play wagers on most of these sports. Live betting contributes greatly to the handle but it is difficult to efficiently conduct this type of wagering at the windows of land-based establishments.

Unlike modernized gambling laws in other states like New Jersey, Indiana’s new gambling legislation prohibits betting on eSports. This is something that might be reconsidered in the future as eSports betting is rapidly gaining popularity. Indiana sports betting enthusiasts are also barred from betting on amateur athletes who are under 18 years of age.

Mobile Online Betting Apps in Indiana

As mentioned, online betting apps in Indiana wasn’t always a sure thing for Indiana. In his House Public Policy Committee, Representative Ben Smaltz took mobile betting out of the bill in late March. Smaltz, who is firmly against online sports betting, pointed out the absurdity of allowing people to place sports bets on their phones when they couldn’t play casino games on them.

House of Representatives member Terri Austin didn’t share Smaltz’s view saying that allowing mobile sports betting was a progressive move.

Mobile betting was re-inserted just prior to the bill’s approval in late April during the conference committee phase. This was obviously welcome news to bookmakers and casinos. Over 80 percent of New Jersey’s sports betting handle comes from online betting and it shouldn’t be much different in the Hoosier state. We hope that online betting apps in Indiana are going to be completely legal and regulated.

With so much revenue from sports betting apps at stake, bookmakers will be working feverishly to introduce them. Sports betting providers first need to form partnerships with existing licensed land-based operators like casinos and racetracks. At the moment, there are 14 land-based or riverboat gambling establishments in the state:

  • Ameristar
  • Belterra Casino
  • Blue Chip Casino
  • Four Winds South Bend
  • French Lick Resort Casino: French Lick Resort Casino has partnered with Rush Street to bring the BetRivers Sportsbook to players in the Hoosier State.
  • Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg
  • Hoosier Park
  • Horseshoe Southern Indiana
  • Horseshoe Hammond
  • Indiana Grand Casino
  • Majestic Star
  • Majestic Star II
  • Rising Star Casino Resort
  • Tropicana Evansville

It is unknown which sportsbook operators those casinos will form partnerships with but there are some recognizable bookies in the mix. These are some of the bigger names making aggressive moves to get their share of the growing American sports betting market:

  • FanDuel
  • DraftKings
  • PointsBet
  • BetRivers
  • MGM International
  • William Hill
  • bet365
  • 888sport
  • Caesars
  • BetAmerica
  • BetStars
  • Betfair
  • Unibet

Using the state of New Jersey as an example, there are 14 sportsbooks offering their services online and they all have mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. There are at least a half dozen other sportsbooks expected to join the fray in the coming year and they will all likely have their own betting apps too.

It is possible that sportsbooks in Indiana will open their doors before their apps are ready but those apps should follow quickly. Sites like FanDuel and DraftKings already have mobile apps in other states so they should be able to roll out their sports betting apps as soon as they are open for business.

How To Choose the Best Online Betting Sites in Indiana

If things go as they have in other states where sports gambling is legal, there will be several online bookmakers in Indiana by the end of 2019. As wonderful as this is for eager sports bettors, finding the best online sportsbook can be a daunting task. Finding the best online sportsbook requires the right approach. It’s really a lot like shopping for anything else.

To learn more, simply take a look at a couple of factors you should consider when answering the question of how to choose the best online betting sites in Indiana.

Bonuses

One of the first things that many sports bettors look for is the best bonus. Welcome bonuses are the most popular and effective ways of attracting new customers. Almost every online betting site has one and some even give you a choice of welcome bonuses.

Those who are new to the world of online sports betting often get fooled by these offers. They assume that a $200 welcome bonus is a better deal than a $50 welcome bonus. Sure, this is sometimes the case but not always.

Sports bettors need to read and understand the fine print that always accompanies a bonus. That $200 welcome bonus might require you to deposit $400 and roll over the bonus amount 40 times or more. Meanwhile, you might only need to deposit $50 at another site to get $50 in bonus cash which needs only be played through 20 times.

Time limits, betting limits, and other restrictions need to be compared if you are to truly know which deal is best for you.

Payment Options

Payment options are another concern. Despite gambling being legal in several states, credit card companies in the United States are known to decline credit card deposits and withdrawals at online sportsbooks. This means sports bettors should have alternatives such as eWallets and electronic banking.

Be sure the online bookmaker in Indiana has a payment method that suits you. There’s no point joining a site where it’s challenging to conduct financial transactions.

Other Important Factors

What happens if you run into a problem at your online sportsbook? You want to make sure there is a customer service team on hand to help you. Not only that. You want that customer service team to be available 24/7/365 and reachable by live chat or by telephone.

One thing that’s easy to overlook is the amount of juice a sportsbook charges. Why risk $25 to win $20 when you can risk $25 to win $25? Would you buy a pair of shoes at one store for $100 when you could get the same pair across the street for $79?

You also need to consider whether a site offers odds on your favorite sport. If you enjoy betting on curling, you want to make sure the site you choose offers betting on curling.

Furthermore, you should pick a bookmaker that offers the most betting opportunities on single events. Sports betting has come a long way from the days of being limited to sides and totals. Most modern online bookies offer several betting options on single matches. And that doesn’t include all the live betting opportunities.

We hope that this part of the text will make it easier for you to find the best online betting sites in Indiana.
