Online sportsbooks are the most popular option for bettors in the state, but there is a long list of retail books available as well. Sportsbooks are given plenty of freedom when it comes to betting markets and betting options, and that is a huge win for sports bettors.

With such a competitive market, most Indiana online sportsbooks offer some nice bonuses and promotions to both new and existing customers. The sports betting scene here includes some of the top names in the industry, with more set to launch throughout 2024. Also consider the state-sponsored platform, BetIndiana.

It took just over 10 months after the launch of Indiana sports betting in late 2019 to crack the $1 billion mark in total wagering handle, and things have not slowed down since hitting that achievement.

In November 2020, Indiana sports betting handle totaled more than $251 million, setting a new record for the state. Adjusted gross revenue also set a new mark with over $25 million during that month.

IN online sportsbooks accounted for over 85 percent of all of the wagers in that month. This has been a common trend established in the markets of many states.

Indiana Sportsbooks

Finding a sportsbook in Indiana is not a difficult task as there are a number of great options available. Indiana casinos are a strong industry, and those casinos were given the chance to offer retail sportsbooks at their location.

At the end of 2020, there were 10 Indiana online sports betting options, and all of those online sportsbooks have some sort of mobile app as well. The mobile app can be downloaded on both Android and iOS devices.

Online sportsbooks at the time of this writing include:

Registering for a sports betting account can be done remotely, which means you will never have to step foot in a retail sportsbook. This online registration has allowed the online sports betting scene in Indiana to take off and bring in some impressive numbers.

You don’t need to be a resident of the state to create a sports betting account, but you do have to be within the borders to register. Locations services on your phone or another mobile device must be enabled so geolocation services can verify your physical location.

Sportsbooks will require some general information when creating your sportsbook account, but all of the information is safe and secure. Users are not limited to just one account, and they can create an account at several different sites if they so choose.

Sports bettors can also visit a retail sportsbook to sign up for an account, but that will require some traveling. The entire signup process can be completed in a matter of minutes, and then you are free to begin betting on sports.

Indiana Sports Betting Rules

The Indiana sports betting rules are very progressive, and it gives sportsbook operators plenty of freedom in terms of what they can offer punters. Of course, the top sports in the United States, especially football, are the most popular betting options for Indiana residents and visitors.

Outside of the top US professional sports, some of the most popular international sporting events and leagues are also available. You can find betting markets anywhere from table tennis to bull riding to sailing.

Each sportsbook will determine which betting markets they choose to offer, and they are not required to offer them all. Some of the international operators in Indiana will choose to focus more on those events, while sites like DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook focus on American favorites.

One huge advantage for sportsbooks is that betting on collegiate events is allowed in Indiana. This includes betting on in-state college teams, such as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or the Indiana Hoosiers. You cannot wager like this on New Jersey online sportsbooks, for example.

Betting on collegiate sporting events is a major topic of debate throughout the US sports betting industry, but it was approved when the law was passed.

There are two major restrictions when it comes to what can and cannot be offered by sportsbooks in Indiana. Esports betting and wagering on amateur sporting events are prohibited.

The legal betting age for Indiana sports betting is 21 years of age.

Indiana Sports Betting Regulations

After the Supreme Court lifted the Professional Sports and Amateur Act in 2018, lawmakers in Indiana made it clear that they intended to pass a bill to legalize sports betting in the Hoosier State. Lawmakers had support from Governor Eric Holcomb, and the promise was fulfilled in early 2019.

On April 25, 2019, the Indiana state legislature passed Bill H 1015 to officially legalize both retail and online sports betting. That bill was then signed into law by Governor Holcomb in May 2019.

The Indiana Gaming Commission was chosen to oversee and regulate the new sports betting industry in Indiana. That group quickly went to work reviewing sports betting licenses, and the industry was launched in September of that year, just days before the start of the NFL season.

Any operator wishing to offer sports betting in the state has to be an existing land-based gaming facility or partner with one. The tax rate of all gross gaming revenue was set at 9.5% when the bill was signed into law.

The initial cost of a sports betting license is $100,000, with an annual renewal fee of $50,000.

Summary

The Indiana sports betting industry is alive and well, and 2024 is expected to be another huge year for the state. In the Midwest, Indiana is firmly the second biggest sportsbook market at this time, and they are expected to hold that spot.

Both retail and online betting is available in the state, and there is a large selection of both sportsbook platforms. Indiana online books are much more popular, but the retail locations have done well in terms of handle and revenue as well.

The top US sports and the top international sports are available as betting markets, and something called micro betting can be offered as well. Betting on in-state collegiate sporting events is allowed, which is a nice offer considering some states prohibit wagering on collegiate teams.

The only major restrictions are on esports and amateur sporting events. The Indiana sports wagering market still has some room to grow, but it has already established itself as a huge player in the industry.
