Michigan online sports betting was legalized at that time as well, but it has taken the Michigan Gaming Control Board time to get that part of the industry up and running. January 2021 is the current launch date for Michigan online sports betting.

The sports betting laws are very favorable in Michigan, and bettors have a number of available betting markets and betting types available. Michigan sports betting has gotten off to a promising but slow start and 2021 could provide a huge boost in numbers.

Michigan Sportsbooks

Finding a sportsbook in Michigan is easy to do as there are a number of terrific options. This is the case for retail sports betting, and it will be the same way for online sports betting as well.

Most of the retail sportsbooks in the Michigan sports betting industry will launch an online platform as well, and accounts will then be transferred over. This will save the customer an additional step when they look to bet online.

Retail Sportsbooks

Both commercial and tribal casinos in Michigan were able to apply for a sports betting license, which increased the number of potential retail sportsbooks moving online like the FireKeepers Casino. There are just three commercial casinos in the state of Michigan, and all of these properties are located in Detroit.

Allowing tribal casinos to offer retail sportsbooks has allowed more residents to bet on sports in the state. Mobile betting is expected to dominate the market soon, but these retail sportsbooks will still be available.

Creating an account at the retail sportsbook does require you to visit this property. You can sign up and begin placing bets on the same day as the registration process does not take very long.

These retail sportsbooks are available for anyone physically at that property, and you don’t have to be a resident of the state to bet. Here are some of the top retail sportsbooks in the MI sports betting industry:

Online Sportsbooks

When MI online sports betting launches, customers will be able to register for an account remotely. This means that residents don’t have to visit any of the retail sportsbooks to create an account before bets can be placed.

Location services must be enabled on your mobile device to ensure that you are betting at one of the online sportsbooks from within the state. If you have already created an account at one of the retail sportsbooks, then this account information can be used at the online sportsbook.

Here are some of the biggest online sportsbooks set to launch in Michigan:

MI Sports Betting Rules

Michigan sports betting rules are very favorable to operators and sports bettors as there are plenty of available markets. Not only are there a large number of betting markets available, but there are plenty of betting options available.

Live betting is allowed in Michigan, and it has become one of the most popular forms of betting. Prop betting is also allowed by the MGCB, but it will be up to each sportsbook to offer parlay odds.

Here are some of the available betting markets in the state of Michigan:

Professional Sports

The four major professional sports in the United States will be featured at both retail and online sportsbooks in the state of Michigan. These leagues include the NBA, NHL, NFL, and MLB. Other leagues such as WNBA, MLS, PGA Tour, NASCAR will also have betting markets available.

International Sports

Not only are the most popular professional sports in the United States featured, but the top international sports are as well. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, and Michigan sportsbooks will have plenty of soccer markets available.

Each sportsbook will also be able to determine which international sports they are willing to feature at its site.

College Sports

Michigan sports betting law does allow betting on collegiate sporting events, including those featuring in-state teams. The NCAA has been outspoken against allowing betting on college sporting events, and the MGCB has decided to allow bets on these teams.

Sportsbooks in Michigan will allow for betting on Division 1 games and events, but you won’t find betting on smaller college games.

Off-Limits in Michigan

Currently, the Michigan Gaming Control Board has yet to hear a request to offer betting on esports by commercial property or a future online operator. The MGCB has not authorized esports betting of any kind, but it can be offered at retail sportsbooks at tribal casinos.

These tribal casinos can also offer bets on sports such as cricket, tennis, and rugby, but those are not available betting markets at online sportsbooks in Michigan. The MGCB can always change the available markets, but Michigan online sports betting will launch with some restrictions.

MI Sports Betting Regulations

House Bill 4917 was the official bill that legalized sports betting in the state of Michigan, otherwise known as the Lawful Sports Betting Act. This was part of a much larger gambling expansion package that was discussed and passed right at the end of 2019.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill into law, making Michigan the 9th state in 2019 and the 20th state overall to legalize sports betting. Both online and retail sports betting were included in the bill, and the Michigan Gaming Control Board was placed in charge of regulating the industry.

The MGCB immediately began accepting sports betting applications, and there was a $50,000 application fee and a $100,000 licensing fee attached. All three commercial casinos and 23 tribal casinos were eligible to apply for a license.

The legal gambling age in Michigan is 21 years of age, and visitors of the state are allowed to sign up for a sports betting account. All bets must be placed at a retail sportsbook or through a mobile device inside of the state.

The Michigan sports betting industry officially launched in March 2020, and retail is set to launch in January 2021. There are just three commercial casinos in Michigan that will have retail sportsbooks, but over 20 tribal nations can offer sports betting as well.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board regulates sports betting in Michigan, and all of the rules and regulations come from that group. Remote registration is allowed in Michigan, meaning that sports bettors don’t even have to visit a retail sportsbook to begin betting.

Betting on college sporting events has been approved by the MGCB, including those events featuring teams from inside of the state. Bettors in Michigan can place bets on the Michigan Wolverines or Michigan State Spartans if they so choose.

The sports betting industry in the United States continues to grow, and Michigan sports betting is growing as well. 2021 is set to be a huge year for the state and for both retail and online sportsbooks.
