As it stands, sports betting in Alabama is currently illegal. It’s one of the most regulated states when it comes to any sort of gambling, but it’s not all bad news, as we find out within this article.

AL Online Sports Betting

Online sports betting has been a sector that Alabama has been keen to outlaw. The state even voted in a 54% majority to reject any state lottery scheme that was proposed to run. If they can’t get a lottery running, then Alabama online sports betting is not going to be easy.

There are a few glimmers of hope for online betting though. This comes in a couple of forms, with the first being that of fantasy daily sports. This betting section is legal online in Alabama, and whilst it’s not the same as betting online, it does highlight some acceptance for online betting.

They are also able to offer horse racing betting, both trackside and online. This is technically sports betting but obviously, it’s limited to a single sport. Again, this is good news for the state!

AL Sports Betting Rules

As we stated, online sports betting is illegal throughout AL. There have been several attempts to bring gambling to AL, but the fact that the state is highly religious makes any progress very slow.

The likelihood of this changing is one that hangs in the balance. They are not a state that is regarded as being terribly proactive with anything gambling related.

It’s highly likely that they are going to need to get a bill passed that accepts lottery in the state, before any expansion of online gambling.

The positive is that there are forms of gambling that are accepted. These obviously include horse racing, but also that of greyhound racing, which is often overlooked. Daily fantasy sports and casinos can also be accessed within state borders.

It may seem odd that daily fantasy sports are accepted, but they were able to successfully argue that it was more skill-based than luck. Even after the laws were passed in 2019 to accept it, it’s still quite a contentious issue within the state. As a result, there are likely going to be frequent reviews as to its success and then longevity.

AL Online Racebooks

Online horse racing is available within the state of Alabama. There are two tracks that are currently open; Mobile Greyhound Park and Birmingham Greyhound Racing. Interestingly neither offer live horse racing, but both offer horse racing simulcasts.
As the name would suggest, greyhound racing is also a part of this, with live racing being hosted at the Birmingham track.
There are three racebooks that people in Alabama can access for this:
· BetAmerica
· TwinSpires
· Am Wager

AL Sportsbooks Apps

For online racebooks, all three of the bookmakers offer an online sportsbook app that you can access via your mobile device. This can only be used to bet on horse racing.

The only mobile access that you get within Alabama outside of that is Draft Kings and Fan Duel, which are both fantasy sports apps. You get full access to both of these within Alabama are there are no restrictions to use them within the state.
