Kansas Launches Legal Sports Betting as the Kansas City Chiefs Partner With BetMGM

Kansas completed a day of “firsts” for the state. The first sports betting venues appeared in the state, and the Kansas City Chiefs partner with the first legal US sportsbook. BetMGM is “one of the team’s first sports betting partners.”

Kansas Legalized Sports Betting

As for the calendar turning the page to the new month, Sept. 1 was the day when legal sports wagers were officially in the books in Kansas. The “soft launch” of sports betting in Kansas with state government-owned casinos’ mobile apps.

Governor Laura Kelly signed a bill bringing legal US sportsbooks to Kansas. That was May of 2022, and the launch date was Sept. 1. The Republican-controlled state congress had bipartisan support to help this along.

Under the state law, each state-owned casino is responsible for a retail and online sportsbook. They will offer up to three mobile platforms. As of Sept. 1, retail sportsbooks are available at Hollywood in Kansas City and the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane.

The Hollywood Casino partnered with Barstool Sportsbook, and the Kansas Star Casino partnered with FanDuel for mobile sports betting. Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City will offer online sports betting via DraftKings, and Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburgh will work with BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet.

The tribal casinos in Kansas also have legalized sports betting.

Kansas City Chiefs Partnered BetMGM

BetMGM is the first official sports betting partner of the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Chiefs are based in Missouri, the fan base is part of Kansas.

A key addition to the partnership, BetMGM has signage rights throughout GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs’ digital channels will provide fans with special prizes and offers for joint BetMGM/Kansas City items.

BetMGM Chief Revenue Officer Matt Prevost mention in the release:

“With a rich history and a passionate fan base, the Kansas City Chiefs are an ideal partner. As we launch our sports betting platform in Kansas, we look forward to elevating the game day experience for Chiefs fans throughout the region.”   

Kansas legislators marked part of the sportsbooks’ revenue tax to go in the fund that brings of professional team to the state. The Kansas City Chiefs are specifically mentioned in the fund.

BetMGM Branches Out in the US and Canada

BetMGM is actively involved in 24 US states and the province of Ontario in Canada. The company holds a 23% sportsbook share, and its iGaming platform is currently in five states. MGM Resorts and Entain Group have a 50/50 share of the BetMGM Sportsbook brand.
