The Greenbrier has earned a reputation as a historic luxury mountain resort. Set among the backdrop of the Allegheny Mountains in White Sulphur Springs, this is one of West Virginia’s top tourist destinations.

Pending state regulatory approval, The Greenbrier could also become synonymous with online gambling in Mountain State. The resort has teamed up with Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG) to offer West Virginia online sportsbooks and West Virginia online casinos.

This was one of the first states to legalize sports betting after the US Supreme Court cleared the way in May of 2018. As a small state market, expanding the overall betting handle is a priority.

While markets such as New Jersey sportsbooks, Nevada sportsbooks, and Pennsylvania sportsbooks are bringing in more than $500 million in monthly bets, West Virginia’s total betting handle was $44.6 million in October according to state gaming records.

Tilman Feritta is the billionaire owner of Landry’s Inc. This is a dining, hospitality, entertainment, and gaming conglomerate. Included in the company’s holdings are Golden Nugget Casino in New Jersey, and Nevada, as well as, Mississippi casinos and Louisiana casinos.

Mr. Fertitta understands the importance of expanding the gaming portion of his company online. He stated that this new partnership is an “important milestone for the Golden Nugget online gaming expansion plans” for them to compete with other brands such as the one with a Betly promo code.

Another prominent billionaire is Jim Justice. He also happens to be the governor of West Virginia. He has always been a strong supporter of legal gambling and the economic benefits it provides. He made his fortune in the coal mining industry that is so prevalent in this state.

A decade ago, he bailed out The Greenbrier after the property filed for bankruptcy. Justice purchased the resort for $20 million while the total debt on the property topped $500 million.

He then lobbied state lawmakers to grant The Greenbrier a gaming license to operate an on-site casino.

A local voter referendum set the stage for the opening of the Casino Club. This was made available for overnight guests of the resort. It was also open to members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club and Golf & Tennis Club.

When he became the state’s governor in 2017, Justice led the effort to expand West Virginia’s gaming industry. This led to legal sports betting the following year.

West Virginia was the second state in the country, after New Jersey, to offer full-scale online casino games (slots and table games) as well as online sports betting.

Today, The Greenbrier Casino Club operates 320 slot machines and 37 table games. It partnered with FanDuel to operate a retail sportsbook. FanDuel also provides online sports betting through this partnership.

The new deal with GNOG expands The Greenbrier’s interactive gaming platform to three providers. It also had an existing agreement with MGM Resorts through its mobile betting platform BetMGM.

The arrangement with Golden Nugget gives GNOG the right to offer mobile sports betting and online casino games through The Greenbrier gaming license. In return, the resort will collect a share of the gaming revenue generated by this online gaming platform.
