Virginia Sports Betting
Virginia has always been an anti-gambling state, and, right now, it seems that sports betting is not any closer to being legalized. Even with the PASPA repeal, the Old Dominion retains its firm stance on sports betting, at least for the time being.
The only form of gambling allowed in Virginia is pari-mutuel betting on horse races. These are allowed on race-tracks, as well as licensed satellite facilities. However, currently, there are no open racing tracks, so even that form of gambling is not really active. In its bid to revive horse racing and the Colonial Downs race-track, the Revolutionary Racing group from Chicago is trying to lobby for legalizing of “historical horse racing” betting. “Historical horse racing” is a form of betting where betting machines show old horse racing videos and the bettors wager on the outcome. All the horse names are hidden and horses are unidentifiable, with only odds being visible for each.
However, for the time being, there is no concrete initiative to change the status quo. As soon as there are new developments, we will update you with the latest news.
