It seems likely that expansion into legal Massachusetts online casinos may occur in the near future given the trend. Massachusetts Casino News & Gambling Landscape
Massachusetts has a long history of anti-gambling legislation which is traced back to the state’s strong links to Pilgrims. Lately, however, a more modern progressive wave of thinking has begun to emerge. Both land-based and online gambling have been identified as potential options for Massachusetts residents in the coming years. It seems likely that a slow and steady approach will be applied by the legislature, keeping a close eye on other states.
Arguably the biggest development in the Massachusetts gambling landscape occurred in 2011 with Expanded Gaming Act. The Act allowed for three Vegas-style casinos to be set up in the state, along with one slot parlor. Each of the three casinos would be set up in a different region of Massachusetts.
So far two casinos and a slots lounge have opened their doors. The Plainridge Park Casino and Slot Lounge opened in 2015, and the MGM Springfield in summer 2018. The Encore Boston Harbour was last to open its doors on June 2019, after a staggering $2.1 billion in development.
Pari-Mutuel horse race betting at select tracks and venues and the Massachusetts Lottery are two other mainstays in the state’s gambling industry. Charitable gambling including bingo raffles and casino poker nights are also legalized. There are currently almost 200 licensed charitable bingo venues in the state.
Poker is available in each of the three licensed casinos in the state but cannot be provided online. Sports betting is currently fully prohibited.
Best Massachusetts Casinos
As mentioned above, the Expanded Gaming Act legalized the creation of three casinos and one slot parlor in Massachusetts. Of the three expected casinos, two are already up and running, the MGM Springfield and Wynn Boston Harbor. The third casino is still up in the air. The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe announced plans to build a $1 billion facility in Taunton but has received resistance from residents. Another tribe, the Aquinnah Wampanoag, residing on Martha’s Vineyard have also stated their intentions to open a casino. Nothing has been decided so far.
The Plainridge Park slots parlor was the first land-based gambling outlet to open in Massachusetts, back in 2015. The slots parlor/casino is run by Penn National.
The MGM Springfield was opened on August 24th of 2018 and is owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. MGM beat out both Penn National and Ameristar for the Western Massachusetts casino license.
The billion-dollar MGM Massachusetts project ended up creating a 2 million-square-foot complex. The complex contains a gaming area surrounded by a parking garage, spa, movie theaters, restaurants, hotel, and shops. The 125,000 square-foot casino features over 2,500 slots, 100 table games, and a poker room with 23 tables.
Wynn Boston Harbor
Wynn Boston Harbor is located in Everett, Massachusetts and owned by Wynn Resorts. The casino resort opened its doors on the 23rd of June 2019 after $2.6 billion of development. Wynn beat out Mohegan Sun who proposed to rebuild the Suffolk Downs racetrack in Revere near Boston.
In terms of casino games, Wynn Boston Harbor provides visitors with the chance to play slots, table games, and multi-hand poker. Other attractions include a number of world-class restaurants, spa, hotel, and sports bars.
Plainridge Park Casino
Winner of the slot parlor license in Massachusetts, Plainridge Park Casino was the first gambling outlet available in the state. The slots parlor and harness racing track are run by Penn National and owned by Gaming & Leisure Properties.
Currently, the casino only has the ability to provide slots games but this may change as gambling laws start to reform.
Online Poker Massachusetts
There is currently no online poker Massachusetts has to offer. Poker is however available in two of the land-based casinos, the Wynn Boston Harbor and MGM Springfield. Games include Texas Hold Em, Stud and Omaha.
The fate of online poker in Massachusetts will likely be linked to that of online casinos. Most states with legalized online gaming offer online casino gaming, online poker, and online sports betting together. Expect a similar path to be followed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. At the moment, there are no online sports betting sites or apps available in the state either.
