Is sports betting legal in IL?

Unlike many other states, the Illinois government is not in a rush to push through sports betting regulations. The IL government doesn’t even have sports betting information on their official website. Some states, like New Jersey and Delaware, have jumped on the chance of added tax revenue but Illinois is playing more of a wait-and-see game. They would prefer to craft laws about sports betting after the first moving states have stress-tested it.

This is why sports betting legislation is expected to occur later down the road, in late 2019 or even early 2020. The authorities want to get into all the tiny details right and make sure that there is no party that is going to make any illicit profits from the legislation.

By then, residents of Illinois will be pining to have more sports entertainment options in their hands, therefore, we hope that the bill is going to be created and implemented sooner rather than later. Until then, people passing through the Land of Lincoln only have access to a few online sports betting websites.

Online sports betting in Illinois

Though sports betting remains officially unregulated in Illinois, there are a few exceptions. Namely, Fantasy Sports and Horse Racing. Those activities have special places in American culture. Once the lawmakers move their pencils and regulate some sports betting bills, these are your options. However after the legislation is drafted, IL residents and passersby will be able to sports bet on the NFL, MLB, NBA as the biggest leagues. Of course, other favorites are going to be included; the NHL, MLS, Tennis, PGA, and MMA are likely going to be featured with odds at sports books as well.

Sportsbook websites

Even though there is no online sports betting yet, you should know how a respectable brand looks. To make smart choices when sports betting, it can literally pay to be informed.

  1. To ensure your security, be sure that the website has “https://” at the beginning. That “s” means the website is secure and people are unable to steal any personal information you might enter into the site.
  2. Check the odds. A good brand will have a variety of odds that cater to many interests. If a brand does this, it’s a good assumption that they’re in it for the long haul rather than a quick buck.
  3. Shop around. Once more betting sites kick off in Illinois, find the best one with the odds that you like. Don’t settle for sub-par odds, you might stand to win more money by placing the same wager at a different bookie with better odds!
